Tomb Raider

Since we're going to be playing tomb raider for class, I decided to do some research because I know nothing about the game. The website http://www.tombraider.com/ description of the game is "Tomb Raider explores the intense and gritty origin story of Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young woman to a hardened survivor. Armed only with raw instincts and the ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, Lara must fight to unravel the dark history of a forgotten island to escape its relentless hold." Lara Croft's only power is to go beyond the normal human endurance. That would only be slightly helpful on an adventure where you need to fight people. In the trailer, her outfit doesn't seem too revealing. She is wearing pants and a tank top, and doesn't seem to be depicted unrealistically. Two of the older versions of the tomb raider game were adapted into successful movies, so they obviously attracted a lot of attention. I'm not sure which version of the game we will be playing for class, so if it isn't the most recent version that is shown on the website then it will be interesting to compare what Lara Croft in the version we're playing looks like versus Lara Croft in the new version.

  1. I have seen both Tomb Raider movies and I think Lara Croft is an incredible superheroine. I find her to be a wonderful role model who's sexy and determined, with dignity. Maybe it was Angelina Jolie's portrayal of Lara Croft, but either way, I think that Lara Croft is one of the best role models out there.

  2. I, on the other hand, haven't watched any Tomb Raider movies and know close to nothing about them...minus the fact that Angelina Jolie played Lara Croft. I'm excited to be introduced to it though, and for some reason I keep on thinking that it'll remind me of the Indiana Jones games that I've played, except more modern and with a female protagonist. Can't wait to kick some butt with her!

  3. Like Jennifer, I, too, watched both Tomb Raider movies and loved them. Currently looking back at them through our class's lense of sexual politics, Lara Croft most definitely fits the outline of an incredible role model. While she didn't possess any supernatural powers (at least none that my memory recalls) that characterize the superheroines we've read about, she still managed to wield violence and combat evil, while simultaneously looking amazing and even falling in love - which might, in the end, send out an even stronger message to girls everywhere.
