Hit-Girl: Kick Ass or Too Far?
As I was thinking about what to write for this blog post, I was googling different phrases. One phrase I put in was "girls that kick-ass" and this article came up: http://calitreview.com/8541. Though I haven't seen the movie Kick-Ass, as I read through the article it really pertained to a lot of topics we discussed in class. The main focus of the article was the little 11 year old girl character in the film, called Hit-Girl. In the movie, her language is atrocious and she kills many people very brutally. Critics of the movie had many issues with this character. The author of the article poses the question of whether this would have been as big of a deal had the character been male. But because this girl breaks many female stereotypes, she draws attention to herself. She's independent and outperforms many of the boys in the movie. She's not overly sexualized- but that could be just because of her young age. After reading this article, I now really want to see the movie. For anyone who has seen the movie, is what this article is saying true?
