Hit-Girl: Kick Ass or Too Far?

As I was thinking about what to write for this blog post, I was googling different phrases. One phrase I put in was "girls that kick-ass" and this article came up: http://calitreview.com/8541. Though I haven't seen the movie Kick-Ass, as I read through the article it really pertained to a lot of topics we discussed in class. The main focus of the article was the little 11 year old girl character in the film, called Hit-Girl. In the movie, her language is atrocious and she kills many people very brutally. Critics of the movie had many issues with this character. The author of the article poses the question of whether this would have been as big of a deal had the character been male. But because this girl breaks many female stereotypes, she draws attention to herself. She's independent and outperforms many of the boys in the movie. She's not overly sexualized- but that could be just because of her young age. After reading this article, I now really want to see the movie. For anyone who has seen the movie, is what this article is saying true?

  1. I haven't seen this movie, but I'm definitely interested in seeing it. And as far as it sounds, it's a little of both. Maybe an 11 year old girl shouldn't be killing people, but then again, it's just a movie. Some scenes in Kill Bill are pretty graphic and violent involving a young girl too. I feel like this is a "you have to see it for yourself" case.

  2. I agree that this is a "you have to see it for yourself" movie. It is strange, however, that an 11 year old girl is killing people. I always question how young actresses can play roles in movies that they should not even be watching.

  3. I've never seen the movie either. However, while reading the article, her age irked me much more than her gender did. Although males are statistically more prone to murder, I'm not sure what the stats are for eleven-year-olds. I definitely think seeing the movie could change my opinion, though.

  4. I've seen the movie and I have to say that Hit Girl is without a doubt my favorite character. Her crass nature is just a consequence of her father's rearing, which in turn is a consequence of his traumatic life. The role may perhaps be too mature for the actress, but after seeing the movie you will understand her personality

  5. I haven't seen the movie itself but as I was reading you character depiction of Hit-Girl I guessed that the movie was also meant to be funny. I made this guess because like Samantha says it isn't likely that an 11 year old female is going to murder people and use foul language. I looked at imdb and it says that the movie is action/adventure/comedy. I can see how a murdering and cursing 11 year old girl is a part of a movie that is meant to be funny.

  6. I've seen the movie and I agree that Hit Girl is one of my favorite characters. The movie is definitely supposed to be comedic, you can't take the whole thing at face value. It sounds strange on paper, but somehow it works. When you meet Hit Girl she is a little frightening, but you respect her for being a rough talker and kicking ass.
