The Big Screen Isn't for Promethea

I was talking to my friend about superhero movies, and since we're reading Promethea I started wondering what it would be like if her story was made into a movie. I've always felt that when books get made into movies, it ruins the story in a way. It takes away the opportunity to imagine what is going on based on how you see the story. Since Promethea is a graphic novel, the pictures are all given to you, yet I still don't think it should be made into a movie. The images in the story are so in depth, so detailed, that you need to be able to stare at each page for a few minutes just to be able to take it all in. If it was made into a movie, every scene would have to be rushed through at the pace of the movie; there would be no chance to stare and try to make sense of all of the images given to you.
It is kind of ironic in a way that Promethea is a graphic novel, since so much of the story is about imagination, yet the reader is not given a chance to imagine what Immateria would be like to them. This is one of the few stories however, that I feel would be worse off without the images, because it would be impossible to completely understand the different Promethea's stories and their pasts without the images. So I think that Promethea is a good story as a graphic novel, but that it should never be made into a movie.

  1. Although Mr. Lirette said that Alan Moore did not approve of his graphic novels being brought to the big screen I thought that the movie of Watchmen was quite good. Of course, like many movies taken from books, it has a lot of details missing but it was still entertaining and still, for me, had the wow effect.
Watchmen, like Promethea, is also full of graphic detail. Alan Moore might agree with you that promethea shouldn't be made a movie but I think that it could be given a chance. Something good might come out of it although it will most likely not fully represent the book.

  2. I completely agree that Promethea should not be made into a movie. This comic book took me a lot longer to read than the other ones just because there was so much going on and so much to take in. It would be extremely difficult to recreate this spectacular comic book on screen. Most of the time I do not watch movies that are created from books because they never do the books justice. This is probably one movie that I would not go to see.

  4. I agree, I think that if Promethea was made into a movie, then a lot of the characteristics that really made the graphic novel would be lost. I found that the overwhelming use of details per panel is part of the personality of Promethea, and it would be lost if it is turned into a movie. Scenes like the weeping gorilla and the big bad wolf might not be as funny or ridiculous if they are on a big screen instead of a panel where we can slowly digest the information and details and turn it into our own interpretation.

  5. I agree that Promethea would be a hard comic to take to the big screen for sure, since each panel is filled with so many images that reference different ideas. I don't think its impossible though, and at times comics brought to a 3D form have more impact on an audience and might make more people aware of the existence of Promethea. It would interesting to see how the directors could use film angles or sets to emphasize the moods that Promethea brings. Plus with the presence of CGI, it could be easy incorporating unrealistic images in. Someone mentioned that Promethea reminded them a little of Alice in Wonderland, which was brought to life recently on the big screen.

  6. I think it would be interesting to see Promethea on the big screen. Though making a book into a movie is taking a risk no matter what book, the thing that makes the movie interesting is seeing it from someone else's point of view. It would put another angle on the story and maybe see it in a different light. But again it could completely butcher it and be awful. It depends if the risk is worth it.

  7. I'm sure with the right film crew, Promethea could make for excellent films, however the comics could hardly be put in the same category. The comic books leave so much up for interpretation and give the readers so much to think about. They are detailed incredibly detailed and the reader can take as much time as they want to interpret the large splash pages and plot lines. The films could be epic, entertaining, and thought-provoking, but because of the huge differences the comics and potential film, it would be hard to even compare them.

  8. It would be a really triply movie if it was ever made into a film, but overall I agree that it should stay as a comic book because all the illustrations are so in depth that I think that it would be impossible to convey all the messages of Promethea completely.
