The Buffy Fandom

A "fandom" is defined as a subculture of fans characterized by a feeling of sympathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest (thank you, wikipedia).  The internet is the perfect place fandoms, since people from all over the world can meet, share fan fiction, music, intellectual discussions, and a general love for whatever they are fans of (generally books, TV shows, movies, video games, etc).  Fandoms stimulate discussion and inspire people to create content.

The Buffy Fandom is no exception.

Being the weirdo that I am, I actually have friends because of fandoms on the internet.  Someone I know because of this whole "internet world" wrote, directed, and performed in a music video about Buffy, called "What Would Buffy Do?"
Many people think that television is a waste of time, and it is projects like these that prove those people wrong.  Kristina is building her career with inspiration from various books and television shows, as many others have done.  A TV series inspired her to share her talent and a message with the world, something she may have not done without this inspiration.  Buffy brought all of these people together to create something that also inspires people and shows kids that it's okay to be yourself.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an amazing television show, not only in the way that it makes people feel and think, but it also inspires people to have intellectual discussion with each other, change perspective on things, and create and share content with the world.

I'm also interested in what you all think of Kristina's music video! Let me know! :)

  1. Haha, this is great! As a rule, fandoms are generally looked down upon for being useless and geeky, but this shows that they can actually be helpful and spread good messages to young people. This video is fun and entertaining while also telling kids to accept themselves and find their inner strength. And I'm sure it took a lot of time to make, so great job Kristina!

  2. Kristina's music video was adorable and carries such a positive message. It also really shows how closely Buffy the Vampire Slayer is related to our everyday lives. Buffy really does face many of the problems that we face in our lives, so we are able to say "What would Buffy do" in this situation, and hype ourselves up with Buffy's strength. You honestly can't say "What would Wonder Woman do" in this situation for she's simply too goddess-like for us to embody. I think it's also interesting to note that the current popular fandoms that I know of, such as Harry Potter, Twlight and Buffy, all have the theme of a fantasy world mixed with real world elements. Harry Potter, Twlight and Buffy all take place in a school-type-setting, making it easier for fans to relate to the main characters, and for scholars to draw themes due to the abundance of real-life problems that the characters face.

  3. I definitely agree with all the comments previously made, and just wanted to point out how much I really liked Kristina's attention to detail. It was a job well done from the Bronze symbol, to the outfit choices, and even to the vampire makeup - it all appears really well thought out. Kudos are definitely deserved!
