Since
2005, Hollywood has been planning a new Wonder Woman movie to finally
represent female empowerment in comics. Seven years later, however, they
still have not come to a conclusion on an actress to play this kick-ass
Amazonian princess. Many names have been rumored to have had their
pictures taken in Wonder Woman suits, but no definite women have been
chosen to play this role. A picture of Megan Fox was photo-shopped by a
fan to reveal her wearing the red, white, and blue, and caused much
uproar among the comic world. When asked if she would star in the new
Wonder Woman movie, Fox disses the super heroine: "Wonder Woman is a
lame superhero… She flies around in her invisible jet
and her weaponry is a lasso that makes you tell the truth. I just don’t
get it. Somebody has a big challenge on their hands whoever takes that
role but I don’t want to do it.” If this is how most Americans view
Wonder Woman, then it is no wonder a serious movie has not yet been
made! Why can't a female superhero be just as intimidating and
awe-inspiring as the males? Megan Fox represented a lot of ignorant
people when she spoke these hurtful words, and brought up the fact that
this new movie will need to be out-of-this-world in order to make the
public love Wonder Woman again.Personally, I would love to see a new Wonder Woman movie come out just to bring back the excitement for female superheroes. I think that having an actress who is both tough and beautiful (but not sexual or slutty) would be an excellent representation of who Wonder Woman is and how she can easily fit in with "the boys." The pressure to pick the perfect woman to play the Amazon princess will be great, however, or else we will end up with another trashy Elektra or Catwoman! It might be a few more years before we see Diana Prince on the big screen.

I too am outraged by the lack of a Wonder Woman movie! Out of the many actresses in Hollywood, surely there can be someone brave enough for the role. I do agree that it's about time that a prominent superheroine (oddly, superhero is correct grammatically, but superheroine is underlined in red) shows up in pop culture. The new Avengers movie actually has a superheroine played by Scarlett Johannson. She is determined to make her role in the movie very mature and on par with the roles of Iron Man, Captain American, the Hulk, and Thor.
ReplyDeleteI found an article about Scarlett Johannson as the Black Widow in the new Avengers movie. The article declares that in previous interviews, film producer, Kevin Feige, from Marvel Studios believes that it has been put out there that the Black Widow could have her own movie after the release of the Avengers. When Johannson was asked about this possibility, she revealed her love for the character and that she is interested in starring in the spin off of the Avengers movie. I think Johannson is an amazing actress and she would draw a lot of people to the theaters, which would work in favor of super-heroine films. She does make an important in her interview, that it all depends on the fans response to her character in the Avengers film.

As with all movies based on previous works, there will always be upset fans about the actors chosen for the main roles, because in our mind no one fits up to our own ideals about the characters. As iconic as Wonder Woman is, there's no wonder about all the struggle movie producers have had trying to find an actress. This however does not make up for the lack of a new action movie. Superheroes has been a huge theme the past couple years, but all the female power seems to be left behind. I'm really disappointed, but excited for what's to come in the following years for our amazing and underrepresented super heroines. Wonder Woman especially needs a new movie, Super Man and Batman have had so many remakes and sequels, that it's almost obnoxious in comparison. (That' not to say that the Dark Knight wasn't amazing..) Superheroines definitely need some new and improved images in movies, and fast!
