Not Just Another Amazon

In this issue of Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman is so much more relateable and dynamic. She is struggling with her roots, she is separated from her tribe, and her gods can't hear or protect her people. Unlike the old wonder woman, she isn't just worried about being a good woman and helping out the man she works for. She has human concerns, and existential questions that we can all relate to. She is compassionate, but not in a weak way. Her compassion keeps her from being narrow-minded like many superheroes. Her compassion isn't a mark of womanhood because the other amazons completely lack compassion. Her compassion is a trait all her own, and it makes her an even better superhero. Her enemies in this issue don't underestimate her as much either. At one point one of the soldiers says that her strength is equal to one of them, and she's outnumbered. He doesn't say that she's just a weak woman, he says they are equal. One to one. Her outfit is still a little skimpy, but her costume is the wonder woman icon. All in all there seems to be a much higher level of respect.

  1. Yeah, I definitely noticed that as well. She seems a lot stronger and much more independent in the last issue we read. I never really thought about the idea that the other amazons lack compassion but I can definitely see it. They aren't the nicest and it just makes Wonder Woman even a stronger character because she has the capability to be compassionate while most people don't, and she developed it on her own, not by following someone's example.

  2. What I really enjoyed in this issue was the way Wonder Woman used her compassion. After fighting the gorillas and making them feel guilty, Wonder Woman does not harm the gorillas, but uses them for her own benefit. She spares the gorillas but in return they help her. In this way, Wonder Woman is using her compassion in a productive way.

  3. I also appreciated Wonder Woman's compassion in this issue. When she was dealing with Captain Nazi, instead of torturing him physically she spoke with him and asked for the truth. When that ultimately reduced him to tears and he demanded that she cease questioning, she did out of sympathy for him. I think, especially for the female readers, this made wonder woman more aimable and relatable. I certainly enjoyed her different approach and it makes for an interesting contrast with bat man who loves to terrorize people.

  4. I really liked what you said about what her enemies thought of her- as an equal/ "one to one". I think that that is an important point to make, I hadn't even thought about it. But you can tell a lot about a character by what other people think of her- especially other characters who don't like her. But even so, we know that Wonder Woman is much more powerful than her enemies that we are referring to here. So they are still underestimating her technically
